Grams, troy ounces and pennyweights
A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than the ounce on a kitchen scale. Jewelers and scrap buyers in the US often use pennyweight (dwt) instead, which is 1.5552 grams, or one twentieth of a troy ounce. The table above shows all three, so you can match whichever unit your scale or buyer uses.
Why karat matters so much
Karat tells you how much of the weight is actually gold, in 24ths. 24k is essentially pure, 18k is 18 parts in 24 (75%), 14k is 58.3% and 10k is 41.7%. A 10-gram 10k chain has about the same gold in it as a 5.6-gram 18k ring, so always sort pieces by karat before you add up their value.
Melt value versus what you get paid
The prices here are melt values: the worth of the pure gold inside at today’s spot price. Anyone buying your gold needs a margin, so offers come in below melt. The calculator shows melt value and a typical range of offers, which is a guide and not a quote.

Gold price per gram — FAQ
What is the price of gold per gram today?
The live figure at the top of this page is the price of one gram of pure (24k) gold, which is the spot price per troy ounce divided by 31.1035. The table below it gives the same price for 22k, 18k, 14k and 10k gold.
Is the gold price per gram the same as the spot price?
It is the same price in a smaller unit. Spot is quoted per troy ounce of pure gold, and a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the price per gram is spot divided by 31.1035. For jewelry, multiply again by the karat’s purity.
Which karat is most common?
In the US, 14k is the most common for jewelry, followed by 10k and 18k. 22k and 24k jewelry is common in South Asia, the Middle East and East Asia. Most bullion coins and bars are 24k, and a few popular coins such as the American Gold Eagle are 22k.
How much will a buyer actually pay for gold jewelry?
Less than melt value. Pawn shops and jewelry stores often offer somewhere around 50% to 80% of melt, because they resell to a refiner and keep a margin. Refiners and mail-in buyers that pay by assay usually pay more, often 80% to 95% or better on larger lots. Get the weight and purity yourself first, so you know what the metal is worth before you hear an offer.
How do I weigh jewelry at home?
Use a kitchen or jewelry scale that reads to at least 0.1 gram, and weigh each purity separately, since a 10k chain and an 18k ring are worth very different amounts per gram. Stones, clasps made of other metals and hollow parts filled with resin add weight but no gold, so the melt value of set pieces is lower than the gross weight suggests.
