About Digest Your Finances

Why I built Digest Your Finances.

Field Chari, founder of Digest Your Finances

I'm Field Chari — a software engineer by day, an investor the rest of the time, and the person behind every tool and word on this site.

I started Digest Your Finances out of a simple frustration. Almost everything written about money is either a sales pitch or a textbook — and almost every money app wants to link your bank, harvest your data, or bill you every month. I wanted the opposite: free tools that respect your privacy, and plain-English writing you can actually act on over a coffee break.

Digest: to break something complicated down into a form you can actually absorb.

Where I'm coming from

I was born and raised in Glen View, a working-class corner of Harare, Zimbabwe, in a house my family shared with other renters. I watched my parents work their way out of poverty to eventually own homes and businesses — first-hand proof of what discipline and time can do. At 18 I flew to the United States for college (my first time ever on a plane) with two bags, a laptop, and not much else. Having seen life near both extremes shapes how I write about money: no judgment, no jargon, and no pretending there's a shortcut.

I practice what I write

I'm not a licensed finance professional, and I won't pretend to be one. I'm an engineer and an everyday investor doing the same things I write about:

  • Two income-generating rental properties
  • Consistent 401(k), IRA and brokerage investing
  • $0 in credit-card, personal-loan, or auto-loan debt
  • Founder of Digest Your Finances and a handful of independent software products

That hands-on experience — not a certificate on a wall — is the lens for everything here. When a decision is genuinely above a blog's pay grade, I say so and point you to a licensed professional.

Why it's free — and private

Because I build software, I made this the way I'd want it as a user. Every page is a fast static file, the dashboard runs entirely in your browser, and there's no bank linking, ever. Your numbers stay on your device unless you choose to save them to a free account. The site is supported by the occasional clearly-labeled affiliate link and ad — never by selling your data, because there's nothing to sell. Here's how we make money.

Who it's for

People in the messy middle of their money life: paying down debt while trying to save, picking up a side hustle, opening a first brokerage account, decoding a credit score. Not finance professionals. Not people with a money manager. You.

The fine print

Everything here is educational, not personalized financial advice. I explain how things work so you can make your own informed call.
