Sterling silver is 92.5% silver
Most silver jewelry, flatware and tea sets are sterling, stamped 925 or STERLING. The other 7.5% is usually copper, which makes it harder. So a gram of sterling is worth 92.5% of a gram of fine silver at melt.
Silver-plated is not sterling
Silver-plated pieces have a very thin layer of silver over a base metal and have almost no melt value. Marks like EPNS, Silverplate, IS or A1 usually mean plated. If a piece has no purity stamp, a buyer will test it before paying silver prices.
Why silver sells at a bigger discount than gold
Silver is worth far less per gram than gold, so the fixed cost of testing and refining eats a bigger share of its value. Expect offers on sterling scrap to be a lower percentage of melt than on gold, especially for small amounts.

Silver price per gram — FAQ
What is the price of silver per gram today?
The live figure at the top of this page is the price of one gram of fine (.999) silver, which is the spot price per troy ounce divided by 31.1035. The table lists sterling, coin silver and other purities below it.
How much is a gram of sterling silver worth?
A gram of sterling silver is worth 92.5% of the price of a gram of fine silver. The sterling row in the table does that math with today’s spot price. That is melt value, and buyers usually offer less.
What is coin silver?
Coin silver is 90% silver, the alloy used in US dimes, quarters and half dollars dated 1964 and earlier. In the 1800s, American silversmiths also made spoons and hollowware from melted coins, which is where the name comes from.
How much will a buyer actually pay for sterling silver?
Less than melt value. Pawn shops and jewelry stores often offer somewhere around 50% to 80% of melt, because they resell to a refiner and keep a margin. Refiners and mail-in buyers that pay by assay usually pay more, often 80% to 95% or better on larger lots. Get the weight and purity yourself first, so you know what the metal is worth before you hear an offer.
How do I weigh jewelry at home?
Use a kitchen or jewelry scale that reads to at least 0.1 gram, and weigh each purity separately, since a 10k chain and an 18k ring are worth very different amounts per gram. Stones, clasps made of other metals and hollow parts filled with resin add weight but no gold, so the melt value of set pieces is lower than the gross weight suggests.
