How the 10k price is worked out
10k gold is 41.7% pure gold by weight, and the rest is other metals such as copper, silver and zinc. So one gram of 10k contains 0.417 grams of pure gold, and its melt value is that amount times the live spot price per gram. The other metals in the alloy aren’t counted, because buyers don’t pay for them.
Where you find 10k gold
Class rings, men’s chains and lower-priced jewelry are often 10k. It is the hardest and most durable of the common karats, because more than half of it is other metals. That also makes it the least valuable per gram.
Is 10k gold worth selling?
Yes, if you have enough of it. A single 3-gram ring won’t bring much, but a drawer of broken 10k chains adds up. Sort 10k pieces apart from 14k and 18k before you weigh them, since buyers pay by karat and a mixed pile is often priced as the lowest karat in it.

10k gold price per gram — FAQ
How much is 1 gram of 10k gold worth?
One gram of 10k gold is worth 41.7% of the spot price of a gram of pure gold. The live figure at the top of this page does that math with today’s price. That is its melt value; what you are offered when you sell will be lower.
What does 10k gold look like stamped?
10k gold is usually stamped 417 or 10K. Look inside ring bands, on clasps and near the ends of chains. A stamp is a claim, not a guarantee, so a buyer will still test the piece.
Is 10k gold real gold?
Yes. 10k gold is 41.7% pure gold, and in the US it is the lowest purity that can be marketed as gold. Anything below 10k has to be sold as gold-plated or gold-filled, not as gold.
How much will a buyer actually pay for 10k gold?
Less than melt value. Pawn shops and jewelry stores often offer somewhere around 50% to 80% of melt, because they resell to a refiner and keep a margin. Refiners and mail-in buyers that pay by assay usually pay more, often 80% to 95% or better on larger lots. Get the weight and purity yourself first, so you know what the metal is worth before you hear an offer.
How do I weigh jewelry at home?
Use a kitchen or jewelry scale that reads to at least 0.1 gram, and weigh each purity separately, since a 10k chain and an 18k ring are worth very different amounts per gram. Stones, clasps made of other metals and hollow parts filled with resin add weight but no gold, so the melt value of set pieces is lower than the gross weight suggests.
