How the 14k price is worked out

14k gold is 58.3% pure gold by weight, and the rest is other metals such as copper, silver and zinc. So one gram of 14k contains 0.583 grams of pure gold, and its melt value is that amount times the live spot price per gram. The other metals in the alloy aren’t counted, because buyers don’t pay for them.

Where you find 14k gold

Most engagement rings, wedding bands, chains and class rings sold in the US are 14k. It holds up well to daily wear and costs less than 18k. European pieces stamped 585 are also 14k, with a slightly higher 58.5% gold content.

14k at a pawn shop

Pawn shops weigh 14k gold in grams or pennyweights and offer a share of melt value. Knowing that share matters: at 60% of melt, a 10-gram chain brings in far less than it would from a refiner paying 90%. Use the calculator above with your weight to see both numbers before you sell.

14k gold price per gram — FAQ

How much is 1 gram of 14k gold worth?

One gram of 14k gold is worth 58.3% of the spot price of a gram of pure gold. The live figure at the top of this page does that math with today’s price. That is its melt value; what you are offered when you sell will be lower.

What does 14k gold look like stamped?

14k gold is usually stamped 585 or 14K. Look inside ring bands, on clasps and near the ends of chains. A stamp is a claim, not a guarantee, so a buyer will still test the piece.

What is 14k gold worth per pennyweight?

A pennyweight is 1.5552 grams, so 14k gold per pennyweight is worth 1.5552 times the price per gram shown above. Many US buyers quote prices per pennyweight, so the page shows both.

How much will a buyer actually pay for 14k gold?

Less than melt value. Pawn shops and jewelry stores often offer somewhere around 50% to 80% of melt, because they resell to a refiner and keep a margin. Refiners and mail-in buyers that pay by assay usually pay more, often 80% to 95% or better on larger lots. Get the weight and purity yourself first, so you know what the metal is worth before you hear an offer.

How do I weigh jewelry at home?

Use a kitchen or jewelry scale that reads to at least 0.1 gram, and weigh each purity separately, since a 10k chain and an 18k ring are worth very different amounts per gram. Stones, clasps made of other metals and hollow parts filled with resin add weight but no gold, so the melt value of set pieces is lower than the gross weight suggests.
