Days the stock market is open but banks are closed

Columbus Day and Veterans Day are federal holidays, so the Federal Reserve, most banks and the bond market close. The stock market stays open with normal hours. You can still trade, but bank transfers and settlement wait until the next business day.

Days the stock market is closed but banks are open

Good Friday isn’t a federal holiday, so banks and government offices are open while the stock market is closed. The same thing happens when a holiday falls on a Saturday and the exchange closes the Friday before: the Federal Reserve stays open that Friday, which is why many banks are open on June 18, 2027 and December 24, 2027.

2026 bond market holidays that differ from stocks

Stock market holidays — FAQ

How many days is the stock market closed in 2026?

The NYSE and Nasdaq close for 10 holidays in 2026 and have 2 early-close days, when trading ends at 1:00 PM ET. In 2027 there are 10 holidays and 1 early close.

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?

When a holiday lands on a Saturday, the market closes the Friday before. When it lands on a Sunday, the market closes the Monday after. The one exception is New Year’s Day on a Saturday: the NYSE doesn’t close on the Friday before, because that would be the last trading day of the year. That happens on January 1, 2028, so December 31, 2027 is a normal trading day.

Is the stock market open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day?

Yes. Stocks trade with normal hours on both days, but the bond market and most banks are closed.

Are the NYSE and Nasdaq holidays the same?

Yes. The two exchanges follow the same holiday and early-close schedule, so if one is closed, so is the other.

Do early closes affect options?

On early-close days, stocks stop trading at 1:00 PM ET and eligible options at 1:15 PM ET. Check with your broker for extended-hours sessions, which are usually cancelled or cut short on those days.
