Why the market closes on Good Friday

The NYSE has closed on Good Friday for most of its history, and it is one of the few exchange holidays that isn’t on the federal list. The date moves every year because it depends on Easter, so it can land anywhere from late March to late April.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics sometimes releases the monthly jobs report on Good Friday while stocks are closed. When that happens, the market reacts to it at the open the following Monday.
